Misleading Headline

The artifact contains a deceptive or misleading headline or title.

A misleading headline is a headline that is purposefully crafted to deceive, whether by conveying a false or distorted impression of the truth, or by implying or asserting a different set of facts or conclusions than the reader would receive if they read the full text of the accompanying piece.

  • Intentionality is not a requirement for this flag. The headline need not be intentionally misleading; only potentially misleading.

  • Actuality is also not a requirement for this flag. The headline need not have actually misled anyone. It’s enough that it has the potential to mislead.

Application

The Misleading Headline flag is intended to adorn misleading headlines that, taken in isolation, without reading the accompanying text or consulting other sources, would lend the average reader a false impression of reality.
